The Ondo State Security Network Agency, Amotekun, seized about 250 cows on Sunday after they allegedly destroyed 300 hectares of farmland in the state’s Ifedore Local Government Area’s Ipogun, Ilara Mokin, and Owena Dan districts.

Two herders who accompanied the captured cows into the farms were also intercepted by the security team.

It was gathered that crops such as cassava, cocoyam, plantain and maize were destroyed by the cows.

The state Commander of Amotekun, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, said the corps, on receiving a report on activities of the herders in the communities, mobilised to the area.

He said, “I was amazed when I saw the level of destruction when we got to the farm. The herders first attacked us, but later ran away. However, we arrested two of them. We also seized over 250 cows.”

Adeleye claimed that the corps would not campaign for compensation for the farmers, and that cows detained for destroying farmlands would now be brought to court and auctioned.

“We’ll take them to court and sell off the cows. As of now, that is the stance of the state government and the Amotekun Corps,” he added.

Mr Joseph Odeyemi, one of the affected farmers, said that the herders came with their cows and ate the crops, noting that the attack had been ongoing for the past five years.

Alhaji Garba Bello, the state chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, said the organization was ready to reward farmers and work with the state government. According to reports, MACBAN and Amotekun later signed an agreement that cows would not damage farms and that any herder or cow caught in the future would be prosecuted.
