by Totori News

The General Manager, Radio Nigeria, Bronze FM, Benin City, Mrs Bimbo Oyetunde, has urged Nigerian women to be more involved in restoring peace and addressing the challenges facing Nigeria.

Oyetunde made the appeal at the grand finale of the Nigerian Women Arise for Nigeria (NIWAFON) awareness campaign held on Monday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event was organised by top women, including entrepreneurs, professionals across major sectors, media executives, and ace Nollywood actresses, among others.

Oyetunde said that women could no longer take the back seat and watch the challenges facing the country.

She commended Governor Yahaya Bello for appointing women in his administration, especially ensuring that a woman is the deputy chairman in each of the 21 local governments of Kogi State.

Also speaking, the first Vice-President of NIWAFON, Yeye Ifeyinwa Omowole, urged women to stand up to their responsibility in restoring peace to the country.

Omowole said every woman shares in the responsibility of whatever is happening in Nigeria.

She urged women to help in nurturing at least a child who would grow up to be a foot child that would change the narrative of the country.

“We are all here gaily seated, how many of us this September picked at least one child to pay at least half the school fees?

“Nobody wants to be a bandit. Nobody wants to be a kidnapper, sometimes lack pushes you to what you never planned.

“No woman wants to go into prostitution. Everybody wants to be gaily dressed, and seated in hybrid hotels just where we are.

“All of us here need to take responsibilities for what is happening in Nigeria,” Omowole said.

Omowole, a former president of the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), said Nigeria has the capacity to restore peace and development of the country.

She said without peace there would be no progress.

“We have the compatibilities in this country to be greater than China, US, UK, the whole of Europe, join together. Nigeria we can be better because we have got the brains.

“Go to all these countries and you see Nigerians doing marvelously well,” Omowole said.

The President of NAWOJ, Ladi Bawa, urged Nigerian women to arise and speak with one voice.

“I am happy that we are recognising one man that has done a lot for women. We as women must rise up and be actively involved in politics, aspire to be governors.

“Others must know that if we must support them, they must be fair in terms of gender equity,” the NAWOJ President said.

Ace actress, Binta Mogaji, who also eulogised Governor Bello for his feat in women inclusion and good governance, urged women to be more involved in the Affairs of the nation.

“If we want this nation to better than it is today we should be more involved. We cannot do it from the kitchen,” she said.

The women at the event conferred ‘Hero of Women Inclusion Award’ on Governor Bello, saying they based their support on the fact that the Kogi Governor had surpassed the United Nations’ 35 per cent affirmative action and had appointed women in strategic positions in his government.

Speaking with newsmen, the Secretary to the Kogi State Government, Dr Folashde Ayoade, commended the women for honouring Gov. Bello.

Ayoade said that Kogi State government, under the leadership of Bello, is committed to the development of women.

She said that the state government is also ready to support any woman aspiring to any elective office in 2023.

“In Kogi state, we have close to 200 women that are political office holders under the leadership of Bello.

“May be some other leaders will need to come to Kogi to learn how Gov. Bello has been able to achieve more than 35 per cent affirmative action.

“I want to let you know that in 2023. If we’re talking about 35 per cent affirmative, we need somebody that has achieved this in his own small area to help us achieve it in Nigeria.”
