Handball: We are going for two titles – FRSC Chairman

by Totori News

The Chairman of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. David Aremu, says the Corps is going for two titles in the ongoing 2021 Prudent Energy Handball Premier League.

He made this known to newsmen in Abuja while fielding questions at the Moshood Abiola Stadium after his team’s unsatisfactory performance on Thursday.

Aremu, also Vice President, FCT Handball Association, however said FRSC’s male team would retain the defending champion title, while its female team would lift the trophy in the female category.

“Our expectations were higher than this. We are still in the contest. We lost the match that we were supposed to win, that was the match against Lagos Seasiders for the female players.

“In the male category we also lost our game to Kano Pillars on Wednesday but we defeated them in 2020 edition.

”They even have a more dilapidated team now because most of their team players have moved to Benin Republic.

“We felt that it must have been easier to win the match but unfortunately we lost to them. That is how the game is, you win some, or you lose some,” he said.

Aremu said his team did not underrate any team, adding that most of the players have sustained injury.

“We have many of our players that are having injuries like a boy playing number two for us have a kneel injury and he cannot play.

“We have key players that can’t play also in this competition; we have to work with what we have.

“In our match against Imo Grasshoppers yesterday, I feel great for the female team to have won the game, I was happy and excited.

“We have to go on to win our matches to be contending with the top teams,” he said.

The chairman noted that the table was now open because all the strong teams had lost one game which made the competition tense.

“My expectations by the grace of God, is to win all our remaining matches because we are going for two titles, the male and female titles,” he said.

He noted that all the teams were given short time to prepare for the league.

“The time frame given to us to prepare for the tournament was short. I don’t think all the teams were able to prepare well because the competition came after the Federation election.

“We thought that they will postpond the league for the teams to prepare better but they stood by the date.

“Everyone had to get prepared and I believe that if we have enough time to prepare we would have done better and have a good performance,” he said

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Safety Shooters defeated De Defenders 23-18 in their sixth game played at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

NAN reports that Safety is third on the table. It played six games, won five and lost one, and it has a total of 16 points presently.

NAN reports that 21 teams, comprising 10 female and 11 male, are participating in the premier league.

The league, which began on Thursday, will end on Nov. 3.
