Importance of communication in a relationship

by Totori News

Communication is an act and learning to communicate effectively can help to strengthen your relationship or fix an unhealthy relationship yet the lack of it can do the direct opposite.

Successful relationships are an outcome of effective communication between the partners involved but yet one of the many other factors. In this article, I’m simply going to discuss why communication is so important in a relationship and why you should begin to take seriously its importance if you want to have a healthy and successful relationship now or in the future. Let’s try to define the word communication for a better insight.

What is Communication?

By definition, communication is the transfer of information from one person or place to another and it involves the sender, the message sent, and the receiver or recipient. Now in relationships, communication allows you to convey a message to someone else regarding what you are experiencing which in most cases is unknown or completely oblivious to the other person. So now how do you let the person know exactly what it is you intend to say?

How well do you Communicate in your Relationship?

Communication is one vital aspect for any relationship to thrive. More so, the health of any relationship is based on how effective the parties involved communicate with one another and the ways in which they do. Without proper communication, any relationship will suffer.

Now not just communication but how you communicate to your partner is also very important but in this article, I will only be stressing the importance of the two most vital ways of communicating effectively which are talking and listening.

Talking and Listening:

Communication is a two-way street, it involves talking and listening as stated above but quite a number of us are not born with these skills and for such people, we have to learn the skill because it is the most important aspect for effective communication to take place and both skills are as important as what you intend to communicate plus the fact that they tend to happen simultaneously for it to be effective.

When we communicate, we are sending information to the other person either verbally, nonverbally, or visually and for whatever method we decided to use, the goal still remains the same which is to pass a message to the other person who is the recipient that is, the receiver of the message.

As the recipient for instance, how do you listen? Do you listen with the intention to understand what the other person is saying? Or do you just think of the next response you want to answer?

For effective communication to take place between two partners in relationship, you have to listen with an open mindset to understand what the other person is trying to say and don’t interrupt until they are through with talking and then you can respond based on what you have understood. Lack of effective communication can cause many unwanted problems in your relationship.

So, it is very important that you learn ways to communicate effectively with your partner by learning to listen more without interrupting until it is your turn to speak.

This is a good place to start from and with that, either partners or parties involved can understand one another. More communication results in fewer problems and vice versa so by the end of the day a better resolution can be reached as to what the problem was.

In conclusion, the act of talking and listening in communication is just the first step to learning how to effectively communicate than from this, you can learn other ways and modes of communication which may involve nonverbal or visual ways using body language, eye contact, and so on to convey messages.
