North Korea pulls out of Tokyo Olympics over COVID-19 fears

North Korea has withdrawn from the delayed Olympics in Tokyo due to worries over the COVID-19 pandemic.

The sports ministry said in a statement on Monday that the country’s Olympic committee opted not to compete in this year’s games “to shield athletes from the global public health crisis triggered by COVID-19.”

The decision primarily represents North Korea’s strict anti-coronavirus efforts after the virus became a pandemic last year. The nation has also implemented tight border controls and appears to be virus-free.

North Korea is the first nation to withdraw from the postponed event, which is now set to begin on July 23.

It is also the first time North Korea will be missing a summer Olympics since it boycotted Seoul in 1988 amid the Cold War.

The Asian country won two gold, three silver, and two bronze medals at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
