Twitter’s decision to cite its headquarters in Ghana is irrelevant — APC counters PDP

The ruling All Progressives Congress APC has hit back at the Peoples Democratic Party PDP for criticizing President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration over Twitter’s decision to base its African operations in Ghana. The APC said in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja by the National Secretary of its Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee CECPC, Sen. John James Akpanudoedehe, that Twitter’s action was solely a business decision by a private organization.

“In line with a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) comment, our response to Twitter’s decision to cite its African operations in Ghana is straightforward.
Private concerns, especially companies, are solely responsible for deciding where to locate their operations.
It’s not a problem!

“However, the PDP, which mocks the country and its people over what it celebrates as missed ‘business opportunities,’ is not good for the country and should not be seen as a governance choice. It is tedious and depressing to dwell on the PDP’s disgraceful history. The APC would now consolidate and concentrate on how Nigeria is actually getting it right under President Buhari.

The ruling party queried why what the PDP terms the present “misrule” did not stop multinational technology companies, Facebook and Google from opening offices in Nigeria.

“Finally, we use this opportunity to remind Twitter and other frontline social media platforms of their important responsibilities to curb fake news, disinformation and hate speech. In the last US presidential election, the proactive roles played by social media operators in checking fake news and divisive rhetoric is a solid pointer to how proper social media usage ultimately benefits society. We expect no less in Nigeria from social media operators”.
