No fewer than 100 cadet golfers from across Nigeria would compete for honours at the 8th Awa Ibraheem Junior Golf Open Championships at the Ikeja Golf Club.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the World ranking cadet championships which tees off Saturday, would see the athletes compete in U-8, U-10, U-13, and U-17 categories for boys and girls.
The U-8 and U-10 category play nine holes each in the competition which will run for two days while U-13 will play 18 holes, the U-17 category play a more advanced 36 holes.
The organising Secretary, of the competition, Emy Ekong, who told NAN that the competition was getting tougher year after year, and that the competition now a World ranking status had become a toast of cadet golfers across Nigeria.
“We expect a tougher challenge from the junior golfers as the competition has attained the World ranking status.
“The competition will serve as qualifiers to the All African Junior Golf Championships in Egypt.
“The young golfers are in high spirit for their games, we have golfers from across Nigeria participating in the tournament,” said Ekong.
According to him, “those who just finished from the National Youth Games, Ilorin will also be participating in the tournament because they and winners here represent Nigeria.
“We have the gold, silver and bronze medallist from the Youth Games here which will make the game more competitive, we expect a good showing of skill from the competition.”
